How to Wash a Motorcycle at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

7WASH Waterless Wash & Wax 500 ml

Whether you ride a cruiser on Route 66, a sportbike in the canyons or an adventure bike on dirt roads, your motorcycle collects bugs, road grime and dust fast. Washing it is different from washing a car – exposed electrics, bearings, a chain and mixed finishes all sit inches apart. Here's how to do it right at home.

Prep before you wash

  • Let it cool. Never wash a hot engine or exhaust.
  • Cover sensitive areas such as the exhaust outlet and, if your manual recommends it, the ignition and exposed connectors.
  • Check your owner's manual for washing instructions, especially for matte paint.

Step-by-step motorcycle wash

  1. Soak the bugs. Lay a damp microfiber towel over the headlight, windscreen and fork lowers for a few minutes to soften insects.
  2. Rinse gently. Use low pressure. Don't blast bearings, seals, electrics or the chain with a pressure washer.
  3. Foam pre-wash (optional). The 7WASH Cordless Foam Sprayer loosens dirt without high pressure.
  4. Wash top to bottom with 7WASH Car Wash Shampoo and a soft mitt – screen, tank, fairings – then wheels and lower parts with a separate brush.
  5. Rinse carefully with low pressure.
  6. Dry right away with a 7WASH Microfiber Drying Towel and a small cloth for switches, chrome and edges. A leaf blower helps push water out of crevices.
  7. Check the brakes before riding off – wet brakes may feel different for the first few stops.

After the wash

  • Lube the chain once it's dry, following your owner's manual.
  • Protect unpainted plastic and rubber with 7WASH 3D Protector – keep it off the seat, grips, foot pegs and tires.
  • Clean the windscreen with 7WASH Glass Cleaner sprayed onto a cloth.

Quick clean between rides

For dust and fingerprints, 7WASH Wash & Wax Waterless cleans and adds gloss in one step – spray, wipe with a clean microfiber cloth, buff. Rinse off mud, sand and heavy bug splatter first.
